Just don't lend your copy to anyone prone to building bonfires. Lamb is a refreshingly bold, insightfully clever and joyously funny book that you'll want to share with everyone you know. You'll often find yourself laughing out loud and, if you're not careful, pondering matters of religion and philosophy as you hurriedly turn the pages to see what happens next. But if you can approach religious matters with a wink and a grin, if you can believe that a good-humored approach to faith isn't sinful or wicked, and if you can believe that Jesus of Nazareth not only had followers, but friends, then you owe it to yourself to enjoy this book. If your only intention is to cast the book onto a righteous pyre, at least be sure to pay for it first. If you pick up a copy of Lamb looking to be offended, chances are you will be. I'd rather not spoil any surprises here, so I'll let the curious among you meet Mary and Joseph, Mary Magdalene, John the Baptist and all the Apostles without additional clues. Likewise, some of the other key characters vary somewhat from the traditional perceptions. The story ends pretty much as you'd assume, but the details along the way aren't always what you'd expect. Events as the story concludes follow roughly the events detailed in the Gospels Joshua gathers his disciples, works miracles and otherwise causes big headaches for the priestly class. Then, after many years, Joshua returns home, Biff as always in tow. ![]() At times the story becomes a bit too action-packed, as the two young men contend with demons, bandits, cultists and the Kama Sutra along the way, but the lessons at the core, as Joshua is exposed to faiths outside his native Judaism, are often deeply spiritual. His quest with Biff to find and learn from the three wise men who heralded his birth makes up the central portion of the novel. They share dreams and cravings, they argue over who gets to play Moses in their games, they enjoy the occasional mischief and, yes, they sometimes act like typical boys.Īs Joshua enters his early teens, he decides to seek answers outside of Nazareth. Joshua is always pious, kind, earnest and good-hearted in the tale Biff is the one person, his closest companion, with whom he can freely relax and shed those burdens for a time. He's not writing about the Son of God here he's writing about a small boy who's coping to the best of his young abilities with the knowledge of his divine origin and inevitable fate. Moore's version of Joshua's childhood is wonderfully funny. Those people need to learn to appreciate a good joke. Some will no doubt call it foul, blasphemous and sacrilegious. But Biff, who didn't make it into the Gospels, was there, and it's time to share it with the world. Thus begins a hilarious, epic tale that seeks to fill in the gaps in Joshua's life - after all, the Gospels skip most of the events between Christ's birth and the years immediately preceding the crucifixion. The buddy is Levi who is called Biff, who first met the future savior at age 6 when Joshua was resurrecting smooshed lizards for fun. It's more than a small anachronism that I portray Joshua having and making fun, yet somehow, I like to think that while he carried out his sacred mission, Jesus of Nazareth might have enjoyed a sense of irony and the company of a wisecracking buddy." As Moore writes in his end notes, "the world of the first-century Jew under the rule of the Romans would not have been one that easily inspired mirth. ![]() Rather, he's writing from the assumption that Jesus (or Joshua, which is a closer approximation of the original Hebrew name) enjoyed a good laugh now and again. Lamb is not written as a serious history of Christ's life, nor is Moore seeking to mock anyone's favorite religion. The novel's subtitle, The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal, should explain why. Damascius, Dubitationes et solutiones de primis principiis, 1889, vol 1, p.381.Karlsruhe - fragments of red-figured Attic ware This mosaic dates from the 3rd century A.D.ģ.2. There are only three images of Aion with a name attached. Here are some of the monuments of the lion-headed god. The first of these is a mosaic uncovered in 1939 at Antioch on the Orontes, and depicts the head of an old man whose hand rests on what seems to be a circle or loop. 3 However there are only two monuments in which a figure is labelled as "Aion", both badly damaged. It was Zoega who first suggested that the figure should be called Aion. Some scholars have favoured the identification with Aion, the personification of eternal time. Nonnus, a similarly late source, mentions Aion holding keys: 2īut Time the maniform, holding the key of generation, spread his white shock of hair over the knees of Zeus, let fall the flowing mass of his beard in supplication. However this is a very late source indeed, and may not refer to anything known in the Roman world five centuries earlier. and in the middle the countenance of a god, and it has wings on its shoulders, and the same god is called Ageless Time, and Heracles. This identification is based on a passage in Damascius Diodochos, the 6th century philosopher, in which he recounts some Orphic teachings and describes Chronos as having the head of a lion or a bull: 1īut as for the third principle after the two, it arose from these, I mean from water and earth, and it is a serpent with the heads of a lion and a bull grown upon it. Scholars have tended to refer to this figure as a personification of time, either Chronos or Aion. This appears to be "Areimanius", but this may be the name of the donor of the monument. Only one of the statues, CIMRM 833 has a fragmentary name on it. There are no painted depictions of this figure, and it is not referred to in the literary sources. Often it carries keys in both hands, which it presents in front of it. ![]() In a great number of cases it is a male figure with the head of a lion (sometimes instead with a human head but the lion's head on its breast), wings, and with the body of a serpent twined around it. The iconography of this figure is not always consistent. In a significant number of mithraeums, there is a statue of a bizarre figure, whom it is difficult to identify. These include Mithras, and his associates Cautes and Cautopates and also sometimes other standard deities like Mercury. In the mithraeums excavated so far, we find statues of a number of figures. ![]() Some items we just can’t take back for returns, due to a one time function like strings or drums heads and other times it’s not sanitary to do so with microphones or harmonicas. It's got humbuckers which are a little warmer and fuzzier than the crisper sound you may be used to on the Ibby/Fenders. I'll admit the thing looks sexy which is why it's such a shame that it's really not that amazing of a bass. I find it a bit heavier (and just due to the shape of it, a bit more uncomfortable to play) than most contoured basses. In the case of the ibanez, it sounds more like a setup issue, though lemons do happen and it's possible yours might need a neck shim or something. So, I want a trusty, low-maintenance, relatively affordable, and hard-bodied bass that will last me, and challenge a bassist of three years who wants to get serious. The only issue I used round-wrap strings for a time, and that damaged the fretboard. Nothing like playing Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes by Paul Simon on this thing. It's alder, so not that great of tone, but I love playing a fretless. Still have it, but I play a fretless fender jazz. It was alright, great action, but it shared the same issue as not having a good tone to it, and the action was so low that even after adjustments it would rattle on the frets. My first was a bronco squire, a fine bass to start off of, but horrible sound due to a hollow plastic body. I've had three basses, and none have made the cut such as the latest one, but it's damaged. Again, not a big deal, especially for an entry level guitar, but if you're a junkie who likes to get your gear dialed in perfect you'll find it frustrating. There is very little flexibility or adjustment for dialing the action in to your preferences. I wasn't overly impressed with the hardware, mostly due to the bridge. Big picture, if you're playing rock, maybe some metal this has nice powerful deep tones, decent sustain, and is an all around decent guitar, especially when you figure in the price tag. This is a downside brought about by the fender lawsuit that made them flip the bod y upside down to make it look less like. My only real gripe is that accessing the frets higher up on the neck is a pain. The neck is smooth, well rounded and fast. Everyone talks about how these guitars are heavy, but compared to my main bass (Peavey Void 4) this is much lighter, and has less neck dive. This particular model has passive pickups, a nice feature if you're used to actives and don't want to fool around with batteries and unplugging your guitar when you aren't playing. Styling is okay, at least it's not the typical faceless bass guitar you see lining the shelves at Guitar Center. I would love to get the full blown Gibson some day, but for now i grabbed a base model epi goth edition. I have had my eye on a TBird for quite a while. |
